Can anyone help?

My 2003 C Max has started to make a whineing noise that changes with engine revs. When I start driving the battery light comes on and if you press the clutch whilst moving the car dies and "Steering Assist Failure" apears on the display.

Is this an alternator failure or steering pump failure, as I have read that the alternator failing can cause steering faults as it is an electrical steering system?

Help!

I think I'd start by testing what voltage you get at the battery with the engine running and with several of the large electrical loads switched on (Heated screens . headlights fan etc .If you get something like 14.5V at about 3000 RPM then alternator is fairly healthy (FOR THE MOMENT ANYWAY)
