hi just got my ford focus c-max. I have got a 1.8 petrol on a 53 plate. Lovely car it is too.

Just come from being a Ford Cougar owner, its a bit strange to be able to get in and out of a car without the use of a hoist and pulley system but with two children and a dog needs must. MInd you its not really a sacrifice to come to this car, i am very impressed with it already. Nice and nippy, comfy and roomy. My god what was I doing all this time with small two doored cars!!!!!!

One question though, my duratec engine is a petrol 1.8, i have read both that its a timing belt and a timing chain. I have looked around and I think its a chain, can anyone confirm or deny this rumour?

two cams, sounds complicated!!

thats great news, saves me getting the belt done now. i look forward to many happy miles of motoring.

i have just been looking around and the duratec HE engine is driven by a chain unlike the zetec engine which is belt driven.

it has auxillary belts which need changing at 150,000 but the cam is chain driven, its a silent toothed chain. sounds rather posh!

my local Frauds has just confirmed this for me as well. not sure what metal mickey is talking about - they may have changed the engine in 2005 as the duratec was altered then, to all belt driven but the 2003 is a mark three mondeo adapted engine which is chain driven.

There`s a lot of confusion as frauds chopped & changed the combinations around from 03 to 05.Best to get mechanic to look at your particular engine so you know exactly what`s fitted.

1.8 and 2.0 petrols have a chain from 2003 to 2004 dont know what happened after this probably the same.
1.6 tdci and 2.0 tdci have a belt from main pulley to first cam and a chain from 1st cam to second cam. Its the belt that needs changing 100,000 miles or 10 years
As Mickey says if in doubt get someone qualified to look (not ford )
