It's probably belt driven similarly to the alternator and probably in much the same place with much the same method of fixing but not certain

We need to change the steering pump,
we took it to the garage and he said to do this the air con needs to come out,
so we will have to pay to have it de-gassed and then once the air conis back in we will need to have it gassed again,
Would you think this is right?
thanks

there's no mechanical pump around the air con compressor I know because I just replaced my alternator .I believe the power steering pump is electric and lives in the drivers side wing behind the headlight or it seems to on my 2.0tdci I will check the tis disc and let you know

Yep the Tis disc confirms Cmax are electro hydraulic not a conventional pump. Reading the Workshop removal procedure you remove the headlight, wheel and all the undertray and splash guards. Disconnect the electric and fluid connections and remove from the wheel arch. Refitting is the reverse. It is definately inside the wing and does not go anywhere near the Aircon. Find another garage before this one makes a right mess of things.
Hope that helped.
