Ok, well might a few things...

Did you take the car out for a long "blast" i.e low gears and high but legal speedsbefore the MOT? This will clear it's throat if the car is not used much.

Have you felt the turbo not kicking in or feel the car is under powered? This could be a sign of turbo trouble.

Trying to think of other reasons and will get back but others may come up answers as well.

Air leak going into the turbo causing over fueling is another contender and the other thing is the EGR.
But let us hope is the lack of thrashing before a MOT!

no lack of power, but wife does short trips for work

Ok that seems to be the answer then

Course of action then is to do a basic service of a Oil/Oil filter and Air filter change.
Then add some Millers Diesel Power Sport 4 Performance Fuel Additive which looks like this :
to a full tank diesel. You can get this from Halfords.
Book a re test and just before the test, take the car a for a long blast, get the car up to the right temp and make sure it is a good blast.
