Hi there
It seems the post is long dead but i will give it a go anyway to avoid creating similar posts
I am considering the engine swap on my 1.8 C-max Mk1.
The reason is, i have a smoking engine - valve stem seals or worse, piston rings starting to fail. I will try to address the valve stem seals an see what happens.
But i would also like a backup plan and do not fancy changing car for now...
So i would like to do an engine swap.
1.8 duratec petrol for 2.0. That is an instantaneous power gain of 20bhp and 30 Nm of torque which is quite a lot considering it is only 200cc more.
To achieve the same gains on 1.8 duratec, one would have to spend twice as much as on 2.0 l engine (cosworth intake, air cone filter, full cat back stainless exhaust etc).
I was wondering how difficult that swap would be.
I am not talking about the labor related difficulties (proper tools required etc) but the technical ones. I know the clutch and the transmission is exactly the same including gear rations etc. The drive shafts must be similar etc.
The fuel injection system is the same.
The ignition system is slightly different as 1.8 uses individual coils and 2.0 uses distributor.
Hence the question, do you reckon i would need the PCM of the donor car to get the engine going?
Or maybe the 1.8 PCM would be able to run the 2.0?
I think they have the same rpm range and cut off limiter etc.
Has anyone tried that on cmax? Or maybe on mondeo or focus?
I will keep searching the net and see what else i can find.
So far it seems the engines are very similar bar the difference in capacity and ignition system (is that much different from PCM's point of view though?).
All your comments would be highly appreciated!
Best Regards.
