hi guys...got a problem with our 53 c max 1.8 zetec..its to do with the stalk on the LHS of steering wheel, the one that shows your odometer, miles to empty, average fuel consumption etc...we can scroll through the different displays but can't reset the mileage or any of the other stuff (always reset the odometer when filling up, old habit..!)...irritating cos can't check fuel consumption, average speed or stuff..!!!

any ideas anyone..?
forgot to say, had the problem since getting the car 18 months ago, i did buy a brand new stalk and fitted it but this made no difference...kinda ignored it but would like to get it sorted..

p.s.can't afford to take it into fords for checking...

cheers, stu

try putting it into test mode and see if you have any joy with that, simply press and hold the button on the end of the stalk like you would to reset the miles fuel consumption without the engine on and then start the engine and keep the button pressed in it should then go into test mode.

if it does work then just keep pressing the button on the end of the stalk to scroll through to the end and the normal display will show again or simply turn your engine off. what u are trying to find out by this is if the end button works at all if not then as u have replaced the stalk it will be a connection after that or the computer is some what broken

Check fuses: 46,68 and 67. Check pin 10 is grounded ( black and green wire ), ground is located approx 4" from "A" pillar base, towards drivers seat, possibly 8MM bolt securing it.
Pin 1 from the stalk goes to pin 27 of the Cluster ( black and red wire ), that wire is for set/reset, pin 3 of stalk goes to pin 30 of cluster ( black and yellow ) for mode 1 switch, pin 5 of stalk to pin 2 of cluster ( black and yellow ) mode 2 switch.

ok, checked those 3 fuses and all ok...?
took steering wheel surround off and found the pins on the info stalk you mentioned but these disappear off into the dashboard-not sure where the multi plug/cluster you mentioned is..?
got side trim off at door sill and found the black and green wire is earthed..?
it seems that in disconnecting a couple of the plugs seems to have reset to zero the av.fuel consump and av. speed but not the odometer mileage..? stalk reset still does nothing tho can scroll through menus..?
many thanks for your help...its a minor fault i know but one thats bothered us since having the car..!

Sorry, meant to say to check continuity of wires between stated pins, ie, disconnect plug from stalk and plug on the cluster ( where dials are ) and check wiring that way. Earth one is easiest, probe said pin ( was it pin 10? ) of stalk and with other probe of multimeter ( set to ohms ) press against striker ( or other good earth point! )
