I bought a Focus C-Max Ghia 1.6TDci on a 54 plate in Jan '09, miles 80k

(Not scared of high mileage the old Mondeo did 296k and ran better than this car).

The C-max problem is around 1500 - 2000rpm the engine can cut out/Stall as I pull away, you can also feel the car at around 50 - 60mph misfire briefly not often. The engine can run smoothly but also can sound 'like a bag of nails' for periods.

Main dealer offers the usual comment of they can find nothing wrong.
It's been back four times with this complaint not to mention the EPB (twice) and the Boot Lock (once) the Cd and the wandering clock I can live with. The dealershas had the car all most as much as I have.

I've a feeling I won't be able to reject the car (spoken to trading standards - toothless lion!!) and that a replacement or refund are unlikely.

So if I'm going to be stuck with the car, then a trip to a good independent Diesel Specialist is next in line (Worcester Area), can anyone recommend one?

Anyone else suffered this problem and had it cured?

Bad luck! I had the same problem but with a Ford Escort a few years ago! Traded in a decent motor and ended up buying a bag of nails which was back at the dealers more times in the first 3 months than i had it at home. I'm surprised that the trading standards are not interested but when i threatened Ford with this(Coventry dealer) they got their act together when they realised i was not going to go away.I managed to get past the twits behind the service desk and eventually got up to senior management who were not involved with the dealership and they eventually got it sorted after numerous phone calls etc etc. I would try and get something done before your warrenty runs out(i assume its 3 months?) as after this it may prove even more difficult.

Thank You Richard,

The one in Malvern has been used by the local dealer in the past for one of my previous diesel vehicles, I shall probably use them in the first instance.

However, I followed your link to Diesel Bob and e-mailed the details of my problem to them, the brief response is probably the ERG and the Injectors obviously they would need to see the vehicle, it may meana nice day out!

I think that the guys at local Ford (Pershore) rely heavily on diagnostics and will just keep reloading firmware updates with out necessarily getting to the root cause of the problem which involves going back to basics and resolving it.

Sent a vehicle rejection letter on the advice of Consumer Direct, which is one step before Trading Standards, however when nowritten response was received spoke to Trading standards, apparently this really needs to done within the first seven days after that it is very difficult to reject the vehicle.Trading Standards spoke to dealer and I'm still waiting for a written response from dealer covering three options, repair, replacement or refund less good usage

Despite nearly everyone going for the EGR valve being the first problem I'm not so certain

I had a 1.8 petro Cavalier where the mechanical EGR valve did stick in the open position and as such at idle it ran like it was only firing on three cylinders and thus very rough idle. I think this would aslso be the case for a diesel

I too have a 54 1.6 TDci and the fuel system is Electronic Diesel control where there is no throttle cable. There is a variable restor that measures the position of the throttle and compares the voltage with the one in the ECU for that particular engine speed as measured via a sensor within the injector pump that is driven from the camshaft. If the voltage is greater the ECU then sends a signal to the solenoid on the fuel pump rack to open further and allow more fuel in to allow the engine to accelrate

There is a Bosch "Yellow Jacket" technical instruction manual on EDC

Good luck in solving the problem
