When you say amps do you mean volts? It would be very difficult for them to test the current without taking apart the wiring.
 
Test the battery voltage after it has been standing.
 
What's the longest you've left the car and then managed to successfully start it?

Sorry, meant volts, not amps. About 3 days is the longest its stood and still started okay. Going to get power steering fluid changed as fairly easy to do, and see if it makes any difference. If not guess I will just live with the steering problem.
Just as an aside, anyone know how often glow plugs should be changed. How do you know if they want changing ?

they shouldn't really ever need changing but when it is difficult to start when the weather is cold then it is probably the case that they do
